A recently published from IDC Health Insights cites that nearly 60% of the 212 PCP and specialist providers surveyed are very dissatisfied, dissatisfied, or neutral about their ambulatory EHRs, and are looking for an EHR Replacement. The primary reason for the dissatisfaction across the over 25 different EHR products used was loss of productivity.

As a result, EHR replacements — nationwide — are on the rise.

As technology evolves in healthcare, Directors of IS are routinely replacing old EHR technology with new.  With the cost and complexity of EMR data conversion, complete patient records from a legacy application are not typically ported over to the new software. This can result in a collection of read-only systems that carry with them a price tag for service and support, a burden of keeping software patched and users trained as well as a technical risk as infrastructures age.

Health Data Archiver is an easy-to-use, vendor-neutral repository that helps reduce the costs of legacy system maintenance and bypass the complexity of conversions typically involved in EMR replacement.

The study reveals that physicians are increasingly adopting or using EHRs, with five main reasons being replacing existing EHR software, opening a new practice, replacing paper records, replacing other software, or combining the above. The percentage of physicians transitioning from paper records dropped significantly from 2010 to 2013, while the share of practices replacing existing EHR systems grew by nearly 50%. Vendor dissatisfaction increases, and cost and customer service concerns also rise. The study highlights the importance of a rigorous process for software selection and implementation, as doctors are increasingly adopting or using EHRs.
