From a Q4 2025 survey of CHIME members commissioned by Harmony Healthcare IT
Nearly 40% of hospital IT leaders say their organizations are planning an EHR migration or transition projects in 2026. That’s according to a late 2025 survey of 21 CHIME members.
When survey respondents were asked to share their most important advice for peers facing these high-stakes projects, three critical themes emerged:
1. Plan Early
“Plan early, make sure you optimize timelines.”
“Bring all stakeholders to the table as soon as possible to identify risks and objectives.”
“Ensure key stakeholders are involved—look for the hidden surprises with legacy systems and data migration.”
2. Establish Strong Governance
“Ensure you have multidisciplinary project teams with tight governance structure.”
“Align the migration with clear business outcomes, invest early in governance and data quality, and prioritize people and change management as much as the technology.”
“Gain executive support, identify your organizational owners, and assist them with execution.”
3. Vet Vendors Carefully
“Grill the vendor on their migration processes and experiences.”
“Get an experienced partner.”
“Find the right partner.”
Hospital IT leaders who’ve navigated EHR migrations know: Success requires proactive planning, strong governance, and careful vendor selection.
