Interoperability and Compliance are Mission-Critical for FQHCs
These best practices help FQHCs modernize confidently, ensuring secure, seamless, and scalable healthcare delivery.
Interoperability That Reduces Burden and Elevates Outcomes
- Implement standards such as HL7 and FHIR for seamless data exchange between different EHR systems and healthcare providers Reduce the number of legacy systems to improve operational efficiency and reduce maintenance costs.
- Use secure, efficient methods for migrating data from legacy systems to newer platforms while ensuring no data loss or integrity issues.
- Make patient data readily available to authorized personnel across the organization to improve clinical decision-making.
Build Trust Through Compliance-Driven Data Practices
- Adhere to healthcare-specific regulations such as HIPAA, the 21st Century Cures Act, and the HITECH Act.
- Implement encryption and secure data storage protocols to protect PHI.
- Maintain detailed audit trails to track access to and changes in data.
- Regularly conduct internal audits.
- Ensure that patient consent is managed and documented per regulations and organizational policy.
- Develop a comprehensive data governance framework that defines roles, responsibilities, and data stewardship.
Over time, many FQHCs must replace their current EHRs with more robust systems that better address their needs. Harmony Healthcare IT can help create a successful legacy data management plan for a successful transition.

An Effective Solution for Legacy Data: AltaMed Case Study
One of the largest nonprofit FQHCs in the country, AltaMed provides comprehensive care for underserved communities in California’s Los Angeles and Orange counties. The company worked with a vendor to archive legacy data; however, they could not extract and migrate 27 terabytes of complex dental images, bringing the project to a halt.
AltaMed tasked Harmony Healthcare IT with solving the issue and completing the project under a very aggressive timeline. Our team created a customized solution that preserved the unique formatting and color of the original images, which are essential for dental care.
