Survey of 46 healthcare organizations highlights significant annual savings, reduced IT burden, and measurable financial returns from archiving and legacy application retirement efforts.
Harmony Healthcare IT, a leading provider of healthcare data lifecycle management solutions, today announced the results of a recent customer survey showing that healthcare organizations are achieving substantial financial and operational benefits from legacy data archiving initiatives.
The survey, conducted among 46 Harmony Healthcare IT customers during June and July 2026, found that organizations are realizing strong return on investment (ROI), significant annual savings, and meaningful reductions in technology complexity through data archiving and application retirement initiatives.
As healthcare organizations continue to invest in modernization, cybersecurity, interoperability, analytics, and AI initiatives, many are seeking opportunities to reduce costs while maintaining secure access to historical information. Legacy data archiving has traditionally been associated with compliance, security, and records retention. However, the survey results suggest healthcare organizations are realizing far broader financial and operational value from these initiatives.
“Healthcare organizations are constantly balancing competing priorities,” said Brian Liddell, CEO of Harmony Healthcare IT. “The findings from this survey reinforce what we’re hearing from customers across the industry: legacy data archiving and system decommissioning initiatives are generating meaningful financial and operational value. The resulting savings can be redirected toward patient care, innovation, digital transformation, cybersecurity, and other strategic priorities that help organizations better serve their communities.”
Customers Report Strong or Exceptional ROI from Legacy Data Archiving
One of the most significant findings from the survey was the consistency of reported returns. Four out of five respondents reported experiencing strong or exceptional ROI from their archiving initiatives, while no respondents reported limited ROI.
Nearly One-Third Report Savings of More Than $1 Million Annually
The survey also revealed substantial annual savings associated with archiving initiatives. Nearly one-third of respondents reported saving more than $1 million annually, while most organizations reported annual savings of at least $500,000.
Legacy Application Retirement Remains a Primary Value Driver
According to survey results, nine out of ten customers that have engaged in an archiving initiative have either successfully decommissioned legacy applications or are actively in the process of doing so. By retiring legacy systems, organizations often eliminate ongoing expenses associated with:
- Software licensing
- Vendor support agreements
- Hosting and infrastructure
- Data storage
- IT support and maintenance
Benefits Extend Beyond Cost Savings
While financial savings remain a primary driver, respondents also reported a range of operational benefits, including:
- Reduced IT support burden
- Lower infrastructure and storage costs
- Reduced licensing and maintenance expenses
- Improved compliance and audit response capabilities
As healthcare organizations plan budgets and technology investments for 2027 and beyond, archiving initiatives deserve consideration alongside cybersecurity, interoperability, EHR modernization, analytics, and AI solutions, particularly when the opportunity exists to generate meaningful savings while reducing risk and complexity.
