Tom Daschle Withdraws

As reported on washingtonpost.com, Tom Daschle has withdrawn from the process to become secretary of Health and Human Services. He cites distractions following his failure to pay back taxes in excess of $140,000. President Barack Obama has accepted Daschle’s decision to withdraw.

Daschle had been appointed to two posts — both HHS secretary and health care czar, with an office at the White House. He will not serve in either job, officials said.

“I will not be the architect of America’s health care reform, but I remain one of its most fervent supporters,” Daschle said.
