A New Chapter in MEDITECH Data Excellence: Why Harmony Healthcare IT Acquired Blue Elm
Harmony Healthcare IT is entering an exciting new phase of growth. We’re pleased to announce the acquisition of Blue Elm, a leading provider of MEDITECH data solutions. This move combines Harmony’s deep expertise in data conversion, migration, and archiving with Blue Elm’s decades of MEDITECH-specific experience — creating a powerful foundation to serve MEDITECH hospitals and health systems navigating today’s complex data landscape.
In this Q&A, Brian Liddell, Harmony Healthcare IT’s President and CFO, discusses the acquisition, what it means for customers of both companies, and how the combined organization will accelerate innovation and deliver even greater value to hospitals and health systems.
Combined Strengths: Harmony Healthcare IT and Blue Elm are now one company, combining our expertise to better serve hospitals and health systems. While Blue Elm will retain its name and website, customers can rest assured that all projects, services, and support are part of a single, unified organization.
Q: Tell us about the acquisition. Why did leadership at Harmony Healthcare IT and Blue Elm feel it was the right move?
Liddell: This is an incredibly exciting development for both organizations and for the broader MEDITECH community. By bringing together two companies with complementary strengths, we are now the industry’s most comprehensive MEDITECH data solutions provider.
Blue Elm has long been recognized as the premier partner for MEDITECH data validation and access solutions as well as extraction and conversion services. Our teams have successfully collaborated on multiple projects. This acquisition builds on that foundation and shared commitment to customer success.
For MEDITECH hospitals and health systems, the combined company provides a single, trusted partner capable of delivering end-to-end MEDITECH solutions across the full data lifecycle, from strengthening data integrity and enabling real-time access to managing complex extractions, migrations, and archiving projects.
This acquisition also aligns with Harmony’s longstanding commitment to investing in U.S.-based resources rather than outsourcing to offshore vendors. This approach ensures our customers receive the highest levels of quality, security, and accountability.
Q: What specific capabilities or expertise does Blue Elm bring and how will that benefit Harmony Healthcare IT customers?
Liddell: Blue Elm has provided services and solutions to MEDITECH hospitals, health systems, and vendors since 2001 and has helped more than 500 organizations maximize their MEDITECH investments.
Now that we’re one company, Blue Elm’s services and solutions will become a natural extension of Harmony’s full portfolio. This includes Blue Elm’s DR Auditor™, DR Dashboard™, OpenGate™, and Flux™ solutions, as well as Blue Elm’s extraction and conversion services.
With our combined expertise and services under one organization, hospitals and health systems will experience more streamlined, accelerated, and economical initiatives. While other migration and archiving vendors typically rely on additional external partners for MEDITECH extractions and conversions, Harmony is now a one-stop-shop with all resources, contacts, and projects housed within one organization.
MEDITECH hospitals that leverage Harmony for migration and archiving services will experience significant benefits, including accelerated extraction and conversion timelines, due to Blue Elm’s deep MEDITECH expertise and solutions.
Q: What emerging industry challenges make this the right time for Harmony’s acquisition of Blue Elm?
Liddell: There are two key emerging challenges that this move helps address: MEDITECH hospitals’ need to leverage their data more fully and their need to reduce costs and save resources.
As healthcare organizations increasingly rely on data-driven decision-making, having tools that fully leverage MEDITECH data is critical. Blue Elm’s solutions make that possible by enhancing data integrity, providing seamless data access, and facilitating fast, comprehensive extractions. Regarding the need to reduce costs and save resources, our combined company will streamline processes and shorten both costs and timelines for hospitals undertaking migration and archiving projects. For example, we anticipate that the MEDITECH extraction phase can be completed in weeks, significantly accelerating overall project timelines. In addition, by completing projects more quickly, we can help customers decommission legacy systems sooner — reducing costs and eliminating security vulnerabilities.
Q: What changes should customers of both companies expect in terms of service or support?
Liddell: Customers will not experience any immediate changes in terms of service, support, or current projects. Both company leadership teams will remain in place, and you will continue working with the same trusted team members. All of your current projects and support agreements will stay unchanged.
Both of our websites will also remain in place, though our teams will be in constant communication regarding customer projects and opportunities to combine efforts for even stronger results.
Over time, customers will see an expanded portfolio of integrated solutions and even greater access to MEDITECH-focused innovations
Q: What does this acquisition mean for the future of Harmony’s product roadmap and innovation strategy?
Liddell: It has massive implications. We already have industry-leading migration and archiving solutions for all types of EHR platforms, but combining forces with Blue Elm takes our MEDITECH-specific capabilities to a new level.
This acquisition will help us continue to shape the future of MEDITECH data solutions — making data more accurate and accessible, extractions faster and more comprehensive, and migrations and archiving more streamlined and less resource-intensive. It’s an exciting moment not just for our companies, but for every MEDITECH organization we serve.
“The acquisition presents a tremendous opportunity to accelerate innovation. By combining our teams, we will continue to innovate and deliver more solutions to help hospitals and health systems address emerging data challenges.”
